The demand for electric bikes and electric scooters has surged over the summer months, with more and more people looking for an alternative commute that avoids public transport. Sales of both tripled this year as a large proportion of us look to for more environmentally-friendly modes of transport that allow us to immerse ourselves in the fresh air.
The demand for electric bikes and scooters soared 230%, with people willing to get out and get fit during the coronavirus pandemic. For those of us needing to commute, an e-bike or e-scooter provided the perfect combination of speed and exercise, without arriving at our destination or hot and bothered.
If you’re also looking to go electric and inject a whole load of fun into your comings and goings, the biggest question you’ll have to contend with is, whether to purchase an electric scooter or an electric bike?
We have put together this article to help you assess which option will best suit your needs and wants. By evaluating e-scooters and e-bike following five categories: exertion, portability, exertion, speed, distance and safety, we hope to make your decision that bit easier.

When comparing your two options, the outcome on portability is quite obvious; the average e-scooter is smaller and lighter than the average e-bike. With the majority of scooters folding down and fitting in a car boot, this is not always the case with electric bikes.
An electric scooter can weight anything between 25 lb to 50 lb; whereas, there are very few e-bikes that weight less than 40 lb, and even fewer that come under 30 lb. Those that do are extremely expensive. A light electric bike is considered under 50 lb, with most affordable options weighing around 60 lb.
Electric bikes are notoriously heavier due to their composition. They not only have heavier motors and batteries, but they also tend to have heavier frames and tires to withstand higher forces.
There are, of course, exceptions to these categories. There are heavy-duty, electric scooters that weight over 100 pounds. And, there are now folding e-bikes which helps to overcome their portability issues, as once folded-up electric bikes are usually small enough to bring onboard trains or fit inside a car.
Similar to the portability of electric scooters and electric bikes, it is also fairly obvious which requires more exertion. E-bikes offer a form of exercise while you travel.
These bicycles are a great option for those who have commutes which are a little too far to cycle in the mornings, providing some assistance while you travel to work. This also enables you to get your legs moving without getting too hot and bothered before you start your shift.
E-scooters, however, offer a different kind of exercise. Rather than getting your heartbeat going through pedalling, electric scooters allow you to work on your body’s balance and coordination; with many finding that standing on a board is an excellent activity for their core development.
Remaining stable when scooting along improves your core muscles, especially when going around bends and over the natural bumps on the path or track.
At first thought, it would be understandable to assume e-bikes would be faster than e-scooters; as this would be the case in their analogue form. But, there are more factors at play.
Electric bikes, as we know, as much heavier than e-scooters, and face many more rules and regulations.
In the US, e-bikes are restricted to 20 mph for Class 1 and 2, or 28 mph for Class 3. In Europe, however, e-bikes are limited to 15.5 mph. Some places do allow nearly 30 mph, but these electric bikes would require insurance and a license plate.
As it stands currently, electric scooters are less regulated, and it is possible to find e-scooters that can far exceed the e-bike speed limits.
Electric scooters are also able to reduce journey times in other ways too. As e-scooters are fairly compact and easily carried, they are much easier to manoeuvre and, consequently, can easily be combined with other transport methods. Moreover, they are quicker to set up and go with most folding up nicely under a work desk, rather than needing to be locked away in a bike store outside.
Their range is where electric bikes lead the way. If you have a long, daily commute, then an e-bike provides more miles to a charge due to the fact they do most of the work for you. It is rare for an electric scooter’s range to exceed 40 miles; however, for an e-bike, this is quite normal. There are some e-bikes than can claim 70-120 miles per charge using a range extender.
It is also important to remember that e-bikes are still fully functional when they run out of juice. This means you will always be able to get home, no matter how much charge is left in the battery. With an electric scooter, this is not necessarily the case. Although an e-scooter with fold down and fit in a taxi.
In most case, e-bikes are the preferred choice to guarantee safety. Electric bikes have larger wheels than e-scooters and can contend with potholes and debris, and the thicker tree offered better traction on wet roads. In addition, the heavier frame together with, the larger wheels provide increased stability and make you more visible on the road.
E-scooters, however, are much nimbler than e-bikes. They are nippy and can easily weave between traffic and pedestrians. Due to their portability, if ever the traffic became too much, it is easy to fold and walk until you feel safe to continue.
